Michael Brooks’ bid to become MP for Bosworth has already hit the headlines. Michael announced his intention to stand in New Scientist’s science policy blog, The S Word, and followed up with a post about his rapid success in garnering nominations for his candidacy. That success owed much to a blog post by Simon Perry, organiser of Leicester Skeptics in the Pub, which did much to get the word out.
Then it was on to the newspapers, with Michael writing a post for The Guardian’s Science Blog in which he explained his motivations. The Leicester Mercury also picked up the story, as did the Hinckley Times, which rather flatteringly referred to Michael as a “top scientist”. (For the record, he has a doctorate in quantum physics, but is now a science writer, not a scientific practitioner.)
Now that the campaign’s up and running, we’re sure there’ll be much more to come. Do let us know in the comments if you see The Science Party mentioned!

Having seen The Science Party mentioned on the New Scientist website curiosity lead me to this site. As a studying astrophysicist I always feel emotions ranging between sorrow and irritation on the policies that the government impliment. It’s almost laughable the bizzare choices that are taken by those in power on a daily bases, generally ignoring advice from experts.
It astounds me that the polititians can ignore a sector of the economy that has seen growth throughout the recession and is a significant contributer to the countrys GDP. Science is not just about mathematics and abstract thought, but a general mindset – to seek answers and improve ones lot in life.
I hope for the day when there is a decent proportion of not just scientists and engineers in parliment but professionals in general, not just professional politicians. Knowing my luck, it will happen when I have been headhunted to work in another country.
I wish you the best of luck in your campaign and maybe one day if you are planning on expanding the science party I would seriously consider joining the party. Scientists have often been the voice of reason, its time we made a shout.
Regards
Alex Rogers
Okay, great idea and if I lived in Bosworth I’d vote for you.
Now, how do we join, where’s the more general manifesto, and what are the plans to expand to the rest of the UK?
Something I’ve been thinking for a while too, lol. So, how do I join up and become a member?
How do I join the party?
