Notice of closure

We have regretfully decided that the Science Party has served its purpose, and have de-registered it in order to free up time to carry on its mission by other means.

Thank you to everyone who gave such amazing support during the party’s brief existence, and we look forward to embroiling you all in another evidence-based adventure very soon.

Michael Brooks (leader)
Sumit Paul-Choudhury (Nominating Officer)

A message from Dr Michael Brooks

Dear Science Party Supporters,

You’ll know by now that David Tredinnick is still Bosworth’s MP.

I’m really sorry we couldn’t make more of a dent in his apparently bulletproof vote. But you have helped make a big point, locally and nationally, and together we have helped put science onto the election agenda. This is the first time science has been so prominent in party manifestos and in pre-election discussions. Continue reading →

Tredinnick unrepentant at Science Party debate

In a debate organised by the Science Party, Bosworth MP David Tredinnick last night branded scientists who dismissed the claims of traditional Chinese and Indian medicine as racially prejudiced.

During the debate, Michael Mullaney, the Lib Dem candidate, asked Mr Tredinnick whether he regretted a statement that he had made in Parliament on 14 October last year. Mr Tredinnick had told the Health Minister that the scientists who questioned the efficacy of Chinese and Indian healthcare systems that use homeopathy and astrology and take into account the phases of the moon were “racially prejudiced”. Welcome to the Science Party!

Today sees the launch of The Science Party, a new political party led by bestselling author and New Scientist consultant Dr Michael Brooks. Brooks is standing for the party in the general election in the East Midlands constituency of Bosworth.

Brooks will launch The Science Party, whose slogan is “Because Science Matters”, at a Skeptics event in Leicester on Tuesday evening.

“Science is not just an indulgence for the curious, but is vital to British life, culture and economic well-being,” Brooks says. “Science-based healthcare has made all of our lives immeasurably better. It contributes more to Britain’s GDP than the insurance, banking and financial services sector combined. It also seeds future economic stability.” Continue reading →

The Science Party hits the headlines

Michael Brooks’ bid to become MP for Bosworth has already hit the headlines. Michael announced his intention to stand in New Scientist’s science policy blog, The S Word, and followed up with a post about his rapid success in garnering nominations for his candidacy. That success owed much to a blog post by Simon Perry, organiser of Leicester Skeptics in the Pub, which did much to get the word out. Continue reading →
